For most of the crew, young sailors, it was their first time at sea. And it was a rough first day. Soon, many discovered that the fantail was a good place to be to get a break from the tossing seas. Being the lowest part of the ship, over the rudders and close to the propellers, it was the part of the ship that experienced the least motion. In spite of rain, spray and wind, sailors still found refuge and even a smoke on the fantail. |
