Combining the features of four types of assault ships now in service, the LHA is designed to transport a balanced Marine assault force, with all required equipment and supplies, and land them ashore by a combination of assault craft and helicopters. Systems aboard ship permit continuous support of the Marines. In an area of political unrest or civil strife, the LHA provides a unique capability for assisting in rapid evacuation and protection of American citizens.  And in any conflict or natural disaster can serve in search and rescue missions, and offer extensive medical care

The LHA has a full length flight deck, large hangar deck, a wet well with rapid ballasting and deballasting capability, vehicle storage and maintenance facilities, medical facilities, including medical and dental operating rooms, wards, blood bank and emergency facilities; extensive internal and external communications systems, electrical supply for a community of 50,000, water supply system capable of servicing a town of 6,000 population, and a specially designed waste treatment system

In order to carry out their ship's primary mission of anti-submarine warfare, the SPRUANCE is equipped with the most advanced surface ship sonar operational in the navy today.  The first major U. S. Navy combat ship to be powered with jet engines, the SPRUANCE has been designed and built to be exceptionally quiet and maneuverable with great speed and acceleration.
