Combining the features of four types of assault ships now in service, the LHA is designed to transport a balanced Marine assault force, with all required equipment and supplies, and land them ashore by a combination of assault craft and helicopters. Systems aboard ship permit continuous support of the Marines. In an area of political unrest or civil strife, the LHA provides a unique capability for assisting in rapid evacuation and protection of American citizens.
