The SPRUANCE class was the first to have gas turbines as their means of propulsion. The turbines and burned JP5, an aviation fuel. These engines are often described as being nearly identical to the engines on a DC10. There are two turbines in both engine rooms, and each turbine is in a separate enclosure. The main reduction gear are to the right. Aft is to the left.
